Get swept up in this classic romance story from New York Times bestselling author Sharon Sala. More than anything, Antonette Hatfield wanted a baby. But she’d long since given up on Mr. Right. He simply didn’t exist. So rather than marry a good man, Toni planned to bear a good man’s child. No strings attached. Then he washed ashore—the nameless answer to her every prayer… US Marshal Lane Monday had survived one close call, only to find himself in another quandary. The most exciting woman he’d ever met—the woman who’d saved his life—was offering him safe haven…in her bed. But pleasure without price wasn’t Lane’s style. He knew all too painfully that the consequence of getting involved would be falling in love. Especially when he discovered Toni’s plan. Originally published in 1995

Intriguing rumors of a revolutionary teacher, Jesus of Nazareth, had reached the ears of Malachi the merchant. A great prophet, said some. Mighty healer, others claimed. Some called Him "The Promised One." They told how He fed thousands with a single basket of food. Even raised the dead. Legends and folk tales, probably. But Malachi had to know. His policy was "Show me the goods before I buy the merchandise." He had to get to the bottom of it all. Eyewitnesses. That's what he needed. So he went looking in Jerusalem and found them -- men and women who had met Jesus. The Rabbi. The captain of the guard. Lazarus. The tax commissioner. The tortured thief. Even the risen Rahab. Their incredible reports made him all the more determined to find Jesus. With skillful dialogue and sanctified imagination, based on historical research, Bradley Booth paints a fresh portrait of Jesus through the eyes of those who met Him, and inspires us to adore Him anew. Book jacket.

In Fannie Flagg’s high-spirited first novel, we meet Daisy Fay Harper in the spring of 1952, where she’s “not doing much except sitting around waiting for the sixth grade.” When she leaves Shell Beach, Mississippi, in September 1959, she is packed up and ready for the Miss America Pageant, vowing “I won’t come back until I’m somebody.” But in our hearts she already is. Sassy and irreverent from the get-go, Daisy Fay takes us on a rollicking journey through her formative years on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. There, at The End of the Road of the South, the family malt shop freezer holds unspeakable things, society maven Mrs. Dot hosts Junior Debutante meetings and shares inspired thoughts for the week (such as “sincerity is as valuable as radium”), and Daisy Fay’s Daddy hatches a quick-cash scheme that involves resurrecting his daughter from the dead in a carefully orchestrated miracle. Along the way, Daisy Fay does a lot of growing up, emerging as one of the most hilarious, appealing, and prized characters in modern fiction. From the Trade Paperback edition.

A motley, ill-assorted gang of misfits and cheats gather together under the leadership of a master conman for their biggest confidence trick yet-the one that would let them retire in luxury-faith healing. But, perhaps, not quite everything may go as planned. Half an hour later, the train, that stopped only on signal to discharge eastbound passengers from Portland, drew up at Needley-and Hiram Higgins, on the platform, stared at a scene never before witnessed in the history of the town. It was not one passenger, or two, or three, that alighted-they streamed in a bewildering fashion from every vestibule of every car. It is true that the majority got back into the train later, but that did not lessen the effect any on Mr. Higgins. Mr. Higgins' jaw dropped, and he grabbed at his chin whiskers for support. "Merciful daylights!" he breathed heavily. "Now what in the land's sakes be it all about?

America’s Miracle Man in Vietnam rethinks the motivations behind one of the most ruinous foreign-policy decisions of the postwar era: America’s commitment to preserve an independent South Vietnam under the premiership of Ngo Dinh Diem. The so-called Diem experiment is usually ascribed to U.S. anticommunism and an absence of other candidates for South Vietnam’s highest office. Challenging those explanations, Seth Jacobs utilizes religion and race as categories of analysis to argue that the alliance with Diem cannot be understood apart from America’s mid-century religious revival and policymakers’ perceptions of Asians. Jacobs contends that Diem’s Catholicism and the extent to which he violated American notions of “Oriental” passivity and moral laxity made him a more attractive ally to Washington than many non-Christian South Vietnamese with greater administrative experience and popular support. A diplomatic and cultural history, America’s Miracle Man in Vietnam draws on government archives, presidential libraries, private papers, novels, newspapers, magazines, movies, and television and radio broadcasts. Jacobs shows in detail how, in the 1950s, U.S. policymakers conceived of Cold War anticommunism as a crusade in which Americans needed to combine with fellow Judeo-Christians against an adversary dangerous as much for its atheism as for its military might. He describes how racist assumptions that Asians were culturally unready for democratic self-government predisposed Americans to excuse Diem’s dictatorship as necessary in “the Orient.” By focusing attention on the role of American religious and racial ideologies, Jacobs makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of the disastrous commitment of the United States to “sink or swim with Ngo Dinh Diem.”
